When Chicks Don't Hatch

WARNING: Firstly, this is a sad story, so if you don't like sad stories, you may want to skip this post.

OK, so you know we have chicks, as we brought fertilized eggs. Well, five out of the eight eggs hatched, so three didn't hatch (simple maths, I'm a smart pup).
After mother hen Pippin got of the nest, any eggs left will just die. We took these eggs out. Interested, the humans cracked them to see what was inside.

One egg, had nothing. I guess that one was not fertilized -

The second had a little formed chick, just a red blob -

The third was really upsetting.. it had a fully formed chick, with feathers. When it was cracked open, it's stomach was cut, and all of it's insides came out. Now, this poor little chick was still alive. It moved it's legs quite a bit, opened it's beak and gave a little, dying chirps. It's tiny chest was heaving, and after a minute it died.

Please, turn away if you can't bear photos now -

Even though this is terrible, and very sad, you can really see how the insides are all packed in neatly, and you can see the intestines, etc.

Sorry if this has made you sad.. or even a little sick.

  2. Hi Miley and Sarah,
So sorry to hear about the little chick, that is so sad. My friend Dillion's little people raise chickens too and they have been through stuff like this before too.

Congratulations on your new additions, baby chicks grow real fast, well that is what mom says, all I know is that they are really fun to chase!!

    Woof!
